So You’re Moving to the Suburbs!

Making the move to the suburbs after living in the city is an exciting way to exercise your buying power. With similar costs to buying a home in the city, homes in the suburbs are often newer, have larger lots, impressive schools and parks. Depending on your plans for the future, there is sure to be a suburb fitting your vision for the future.

Below are a few factors that your new suburban life may have and you should look out for.

    1. Well and Septic Systems: Depending on the subdivision you’re looking in, the homes may still be connected to the well and/or septic systems. Well and/or septic may mean that you are responsible for maintaining the well and septic systems, which can be costly.

    2. Radon: Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that exists under ground. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer next to cigarettes. Newer homes have a higher concentration of radon than older homes due to the lack of cracks and air flow.

    3. Skunks, Raccoons, Foxes, Coyotes: While the suburbs are not homes to city-sized rats, there are other rodents to be aware of. Skunks may be intimidated by your pets and spray them with a foul smelling odor. Racoons may help themselves to your garbage. Foxes and Coyotes are mostly harmless to humans but they hunt small rodents and you should guard your small pets from them.

    4. Home Owners Associations: Homeowners associations are a governing body of subdivisions. You may have to pay an additional fee to access the common elements like a pool or clubhouse. You may have to request permission from them to install a shed, fence or paint the exterior of your home.

    5. Overnight Parking: Many municipalities have rules against parking on the street overnight. They may allow free overnight parking if you notify them in advance. If you or your guests plan to park on the street overnight, investigate the rules regarding overnight parking.
